Guide To Rolling a Blunt Step-By-Step
When it comes to enjoying all that cannabis has to offer, few ways of smoking it come close to the type of experience you get from taking a hit from a perfectly rolled blunt. Yet with all the fancy best-selling glassware and vaporizers on the market, the art and science of rolling a blunt has largely been lost among many who partake.
In this guide, we’ll cover the blunt from A-to-Z, from what it is, why it is something everyone should experience smoking from at least once, its individual components, and most importantly: HOW TO ROLL A BLUNT the right way.
What Makes a Blunt a “Blunt”?
Before we dive into the “how to” part of this guide, it’s important that you have an understanding of what a blunt is (and is not), from its components to color, size and even flavor.
Interior of the Blunt
Just like with people, its what’s on the inside that counts the most. The inside of a traditional blunt should consist only of cannabis. If it's mixed with anything else, for either flavor or effect, it is no longer a true blunt.
The Exterior of the Blunt
While you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, you certainly can with a blunt. One of the major differences between a joint and a blunt is that a true blunt is rolled with real tobacco paper or tobacco leaves. Blunts may also be made by emptying out a cigar wrap and using that for rolling the blunt.
The Color of Excellence
Your rolled blunt should be brown like milk chocolate. As far as color goes, a blunt should be “tobacco brown” in color, ranging from light to dark brown depending on the particular leaves used for the rolling paper. What it should never be is white or printed.
Blunts are generally larger than joints, but they can range in size quite a bit. The exact size in both girth and length is largely dependent on how much cannabis you have on hand, and your personal preferences.
How to Roll a Blunt - Hand vs. Machine Rolling
Although this guide will focus on how to roll a blunt by hand, machine rolling blunts is also an option provided you have the equipment. Although machine rolling blunts is fast, efficient and produces a consistent level of quality and form, hand rolling is a preferred method.
There is an art and science to hand rolling a blunt, but one that is well worth learning and mastering. Being able to roll a blunt by hand is a valuable skill to have, as well as part of the entire experience itself. There is a certain pleasure to be had in smoking a blunt that you created and rolled from scratch yourself. Similar to how the best cigars are rolled by hand, so are the best blunts.
ROLL A BLUNT – STEP BY STEP GUIDE
Step 1 – Get everything together
Getting the proper supplies together seems like a no-brainer, but the last thing you want is to get halfway through the process only to find out you’re missing something. First things first, gather up everything you need to roll the perfect blunt.
Items You’ll Need on Hand Include:
Step 2 – Get your grind on
Now that you have all the necessary components and tools together, your next item on the “to do” list is to break down your cannabis into what is known as “shake”. Shake is comprised of small bits of cannabis flower broken off of larger buds. Using your grinder you can create high quality shake. You want the resulting shake to not be so fine that it resembles powder (it will pack too tight), but not so large and loose that it’ll be bulky when wrapped. Aim for something the consistency of loose granola.
Not confident in making your own shake? Most cannabis dispensaries now sell shake pre-made for you in a wide range of your favorite strains.
Step 3 – Prep the Blunt Wrap
If you are unable to find suitable empty wraps, a common “go-to” are Hemp Wraps from the Twisted Hemp brand. Other types cigar wraps like Phillies, Backwoods or Swisher Sweets that you can find at 7-eleven, that can also be emptied and the wraps used for rolling your blunt.
Take the blade you set aside and cut the rolling paper lengthwise. Next, empty out any tobacco and discard (or keep for later).
Step 4 – Wet the Wrap
The use of moisture can make the wrap easier to shape and seal when rolling. It can also aid in sealing up any micro-tears that may have occurred when emptying out the tobacco. Usually a quick lick of the tongue is enough saliva to do the trick. However, if you’re rolling or sharing with someone else you might want to wet the tip of your finger to use instead.
Step 5 – Fill the wrap
Taking the ground cannabis or “shake” from Step 2, fill the empty tobacco wrapping. The exact amount necessary is dependent on a number of factors such as the size of your rolling paper, how big you desire the end product to be, and how loose or tightly you roll/pack it. However, for most blunts using paper from a standard cigarillo, 2 grams is about the right amount.
Step 6 – Roll the blunt wrap
Once the wrap is filled, gently roll the wrap between your fingers in order to ensure the blunt is evenly distributed and packed with cannabis. Failing to properly apply moisture in step 4 may result in “cracking” when rolling.
After the blunt has been properly packed and evenly rolled out, you’ll want to wet the inside of the exposed edge before you tuck the wrap underneath itself. This will aid in ensuring an airtight seal that won’t fall apart during use.
Pro Tip: If you accidentally puncture the wrap at any point in this process you can use the natural gummy adhesive from the rolling papers to repair it. We carry most
Step 7 – “Bake” the blunt
You heard us right, but don’t worry, you won’t need a cookbook or an oven to tackle this step. Baking a blunt involves running a lighter flame quickly up and down the blunt lengthwise, under the seam and around the outside. Be careful not to let the flame linger or you could actually burn the paper. The goal is to heat the blunt up and dry it out while tightening up the seal. This can aid in producing a more even burn and is an important step that should not be ignored.
That’s it! You’re ready to toke up on the spot or save the blunt for later use. If you prefer to be eco-friendly or don't like the harshness of a wrap, a glass blunt might be a great alternative. Check out our smoking accessories for everything else.
Benefits of Rolling a Blunt
The thickness, composition, and size of a blunt are attractive aspects due to the slower burn rate, making them a more enjoyable experience when relaxing by yourself or with friends. The added tobacco wrap also adds an element of flavor, while also producing its own type of “buzz” that is notably similar to that from coffee.
