Getting Marijuana Legalized In Your State

Getting Mary Jane Legalized In Your State

Here in the good old US of A, the possession and use of the nation’s favorite green herb (cannabis) is still illegal under federal law under the legislative thumb of the Controlled Substances Act of 1970.

Yet that hasn’t stopped states from individually decriminalizing, or legalizing cannabis at the state level, either for recreational or medicinal purposes. This move has been a godsend for individuals who rely on the herb for therapeutic and medical applications, as well as providing causal and recreational users with a way to enjoy marijuana legally and responsibly.

Not only that, the move towards legalization has created a literal financial windfall for those state who have jumped on the bandwagon.

But what if you live in a state where Marijuana is still illegal? Is there anything you can do to help legalize marijuana in your state?

This guide will walk you through the steps you can take as an individual to further the cause.

  1. Connect With Other Like-Minded Individuals and Organizations

Getting involved is a big step towards making a real difference in the fight for legalization in your state. Most organizations are happy to have any support or help they can get, from donations of money or time, to simply spreading the word.

Places to Look:

  • Google
  • Social Media
  • Local groups and organizations
  • Medical dispensaries (if you have them in the state)
  1. Stay Informed

Staying informed might seem like a no-brainer, but keeping up with news, legislation and proposed amendments to regulations can provide you with the educational knowledge you need to make a good case for the cause. It will also mean that you’ll be ready to call on legislators and state representatives to do the right thing.

Those in office are elected officials, and they DO pay attention to the needs, wants and demands of their constituents. Calling their office and sending letters about the benefits of legalizing marijuana and how it would positively impact you as well as the community at large can go a long way if everyone does their part.

  1. Spread the Word

Making noise and spreading awareness about the topic can and do make a difference. Education and awareness are key to helping others understand the importance of legalized marijuana in your state.

Ways You Can Spread the Word:

  • Call or mail your legislators
  • Show up to town and city meetings
  • Start a community or advocacy group
  • Blog about the topic
  • Spread positive awareness and news on social media
  • Write a letter to your local newspapers about policy reform
  • Hand out brochures
  • Start a petition

  1. Get out and Vote (and encourage others to do the same)

Your state representatives are just that: representatives of the people. They are elected into positions and entrusted to carry out and support legislation (among other things) that best serve their constituents.

Every vote matters. Make sure your voice is heard and make sure others express theirs as well.

Closing Thoughts

We live in exciting times, with medicinal use of cannabis already approved in 33 states, and with 11 states have legalized its use for recreational purposes. Other jurisdictions are moving towards legalization and/or decriminalization. The good news is that you too can take part in this movement by doing your part to educate and bring awareness to this often emotionally charged topic.
